NORTH HIGH AND DAVENPORT SCHOOLS EXPLORE
“HIGH SCHOOLS THAT WORK” CURRICULUM/PROGRAM

“High Schools that Work” is the nation’s first large-scale effort to engage state, district and school leaders and teachers in partnerships with students, parents and the community to improve the way high school students are prepared for work and post-secondary education.  With the support of a $50,000 grant from the Iowa Department of Education, staff members from North High School and other Davenport Community Schools programs will be meeting March 8 to begin building a “High Schools that Work” model here in Davenport.

Currently, the “High Schools that Work” model is functioning in more than 1,100 sites across the country.  Major goals of the program are to raise student achievement in math, science, communication, problem solving and technical skills; blend the content of traditional college-prep studies with career and technical studies; and to sustain continuous improvement.  Unique aspects of the model include the focus on career planning, the support of a block schedule that allows students to earn more credit and participate in a wider curriculum, increased staff development; and customized site action plans to reach specific local goals.

Gary Keller, a representative from the “High Schools that Work program” will be leading the afternoon’s discussion.  For more information, please contact Betsy Fair, Curriculum and Instruction Coordinator at North, 388-9880.
