Author Carol Gorman will visit Smart School on May 14th and 15th.  Gorman, from Cedar Rapids, is an internationally known author of books for children and young adults.  This visit will be Ms. Gorman’s fourth to Smart and is supported by Great Minds, Humanities Iowa, the National Endowment for the Humanities, and the Bi-State Literacy Council.

Smart’s sixth grade students have all read Ms. Gorman’s novel, Stumptown Kid, and will be discussing it with her as well as examining the writing process.  Stumptown Kid is set in small town Iowa in 1952 and is the story of Charlie Nebraska who befriends an African-American baseball player from the South.

Gorman’s evening presentation, “Using Stumptown Kid to Examine Iowa in the 1950’s” is on May 14th  at 6:00 and is open to the public.  In conjunction with this presentation, the Smart community will share in a spaghetti dinner at 5:00.  Various activities will take place in the gym prior to the program including a Hula Hoop contest (the Hula Hoop was introduced in the 1950’s) and a 50’s Trivia Contest.
